Welcome to Light Horse Ranch, a rugged retreat nestled deep in Arizona's storied cattle countryâthe heart of traditional ApacherĂa. Here, history isn't just remembered; it's lived from the saddle.
The term "Light Horse" refers to the elite light cavalry regimentsâmounted troops renowned for their speed, mobility, and skill in reconnaissance, skirmishing, and rapid pursuit. In the era of Western expansion, the Light Horse was the vital, swift-moving arm of the U.S. military, defining the capabilities of the frontier Army. Of course, in their way, the Apache were also superb "light horse" warriors.
At Light Horse Ranch, we embody this spirit: the quick-witted horsemanship, the deep bond between rider and mount, and the discipline required to thrive in a demanding landscape.
Our ground is hallowed ground. This region was the epicenter of conflict and change, serving as the operational heartland for the U.S. Cavalry during the closing chapters of the frontier. We stand where legendary regiments once rode, including:
The 1st Dragoons: One of the Armyâs oldest and most distinguished cavalry units.
The Buffalo Soldiers: The courageous African-American cavalrymen of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, whose dedication helped secure the territory.
Remount Headquarters: This country was essential to the U.S. Armyâs crucial remount program, dedicated to breeding the tough, fast, and resilient horses necessary for sustained service.
The Chiricahua tribe of the Apache and various bands from the other Apache tribes once called this range home and certainly qualify as Light Horse masters in their own right.
We bring the frontier legacy to life, blending indigenous ranching traditions with the history of U.S. expansion through a unique, hands-on experience:
Criollo Cattle Ranching: Work alongside us as we manage our herd of Criollo Cattle, descendants of the original Spanish cattle that thrived in this rugged environmentâa true connection to centuries of ranching tradition. This herd is managed in collaboration with the New Mexico State University's Jornada Experimental Range Project, University of Arizona initiatives and programs, and the U.S. Department of Agricultural Extension Service.
Reviving the Remount Program: We are actively dedicated to recreating the bloodlines that fed the U.S. Armyâs Remount Program, giving our guests the opportunity to ride the same type of tough, intelligent horses that defined the American West. The training program is being brought back to life using historical manuals and documents.
Frontier Skills Training: Sharpen your discipline and focus with expert-led firearms trainingâa necessary frontier skillâconducted under the highest safety standards in our expansive shooting range facilities.
Authentic Dude Ranch Stay: Retreat to the comfort of our authentic ranch lodging after a day on the range, enjoying world-class hospitality in a setting steeped in Apache, military, and cowboy lore.
At Light Horse Ranch, you donât just observe history; you ride right into it.
